About me

Erin Berkyto | The Knotty Garden

Hi, I’m Erin Berkyto, the gardener, educator, and creative force behind The Knotty Garden.

I began sharing my gardening journey on social media in 2022, documenting what it really looks like to grow food and flowers in an urban space. What started as a personal passion quickly grew into a trusted gardening platform and community of hundreds of thousands of gardeners across North America who value practical knowledge, curiosity, and joy in the garden.

Over the past several years, I’ve transformed my own urban garden into a highly productive, wildlife-friendly space that I plan, plant, and maintain myself. My work focuses on helping people grow food and flowers with confidence, even in small or imperfect spaces, using systems that are realistic, sustainable, and rooted in experience.

I hold a Master of Science degree from the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine and previously served as clinical faculty. That science-based background shapes everything I teach. I approach gardening the same way I approach research: observing patterns, testing methods, and translating evidence-based knowledge into clear, accessible guidance that gardeners can actually use.

Today, I travel across North America speaking on stages at major home and garden shows, teaching audiences how to grow more food, design better gardens, and reconnect with where their food comes from. I’ve appeared at events including large-scale garden expos, industry conferences, and live workshops, and I’ve collaborated with leading brands in gardening, home, and lifestyle who value credibility, education, and authentic storytelling.

In addition to speaking and content creation, I design practical tools for gardeners who want structure without rigidity. My all-new, undated Knotty Garden Journal, available as a digital download and a softcover edition, is designed to be used at any time of year. It helps gardeners plan by season, track what they plant, learn from each growing cycle, and build long-term confidence through record-keeping and reflection.

At the heart of everything I do is a belief that gardening is more than a hobby. It’s a skill. It’s a form of resilience. And it’s one of the most powerful ways we can reconnect with nature, our food systems, and ourselves.

Whether I’m in the garden, on stage, or sharing practical education online, my goal is always the same: to make gardening feel achievable, empowering, and deeply rewarding.
